How To Check a Dental Crowns Surgeon's Credentials in Turkey

Your dental crowns result depends on the surgeon, not the clinic brand. How to confirm registration, specialty training, experience and society memberships.

Turkey has become one of the most visited destinations in the world for dental crowns, and for good reason: the price difference versus Western Europe is dramatic, and many clinics genuinely deliver quality work. The problem is that some do not, and a badly fitted crown or an infected preparation site is not something you want to discover 2,000 kilometres from your dentist. Before you book anything, there are five specific things worth verifying about the person who will be putting a drill in your mouth.

What You Are Actually Paying For

DetailTypical in Turkey
Price range€100 – €300 per crown
Procedure time2 visits (3–5 days)
AnaesthesiaLocal
DowntimeNone
Recovery1–2 days
Stay in Turkey4–6 days
The price above is per crown, which matters when treatment plans quickly climb to six, eight, or twelve units. The two-visit structure is standard: the dentist prepares and temporises on day one, then fits the permanent crown after the lab turnaround. Some clinics use same-day milling (CEREC), which compresses the schedule but is not always appropriate for complex cases. Knowing the timeline upfront helps you pressure-test any clinic that promises unrealistically fast results.

Turkish Medical Association Registration

Every dentist licensed to practise in Turkey must be registered with the Turkish Medical Association (Turk Tabipleri Birligi, TTB) or, for dentists specifically, the Turkish Dental Association (Turkiye Dis Hekimleri Birligi, TDHB). These are not optional memberships. Practising without registration is illegal.

Ask the clinic directly for the dentist's TDHB registration number before you pay a deposit. A legitimate clinic will hand this over without hesitation. If you get vague answers or a number that cannot be looked up on the TDHB's official directory, that is a significant warning sign. The directory is publicly searchable; you do not need to speak Turkish to use it because the name-search field is straightforward.

This step takes five minutes and filters out a surprising number of problems.

Specialty Training and What It Actually Means

In Turkey, prosthodontics (prostodonti) is a recognised dental specialty requiring additional post-graduate training beyond the standard five-year dental degree. A general dentist can legally place crowns, and many do so competently, but if your case is complex, such as full-mouth rehabilitation, crown-lengthening requirements, or significant bite correction, a prosthodontist's training is directly relevant.

Ask specifically:

  • ✓Where did they complete their specialty training, and in which year?
  • ✓Are they a member of the Turkish Prosthodontics Society (Turk Protetik Dis Hekimligi Dernegi)?
  • ✓How many crown cases do they personally place per year?
On that last point, ask for their personal volume, not the clinic's volume. A clinic might place 500 crowns a month across six dentists, which tells you almost nothing about the individual who will be working on you. Ask your surgeon for their personal case volume and, while you are at it, their personal revision rate. Any experienced dentist will have a figure; anyone who cannot give you one is either inexperienced or evasive.

Society Memberships and Why They Matter

Membership in a professional society is not a guarantee of quality, but it is a verifiable signal of engagement with the field. The Turkish Prosthodontics Society maintains a member directory. Check that the dentist appears in it. You can also look for membership in the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA), which some Turkish specialists hold.

One thing to watch for: some clinics list society affiliations in their marketing copy without the dentist actually being a current member. Always verify directly in the society's own directory rather than relying on the clinic website. This takes two minutes and is worth doing.

Confirming They Will Actually Operate on You

This is less obvious than it sounds. In high-volume dental tourism clinics, it is not unheard of for a senior clinician to do the consultation, a junior dentist or even a dental therapist to do the preparation, and the same senior clinician to do the fitting. Ask explicitly, in writing, which dentist will be performing each stage of your treatment. Get the full name, not just a title.

This is not about distrust; it is about informed consent. You have the right to know who is working on your teeth. If the clinic is evasive or the answer keeps changing between emails, treat that as a hard stop. No procedure is risk-free, and local anaesthesia does not eliminate the possibility of nerve sensitivity, post-preparation discomfort, or crown failure; the experience of your operator directly affects those outcomes. The best outcome is a boring one: two clean visits, a well-fitted crown, and a straightforward trip home.

About Dental Crowns in Turkey

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that cover a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Modern crowns are made from zirconia or ceramic materials that perfectly match natural tooth color and translucency.

Turkey offers dental crowns at 60-80% less than UK prices, using the same premium materials and CAD/CAM technology. Many Turkish dental clinics have in-house labs that can fabricate crowns within 24-48 hours, reducing treatment time.

The treatment typically requires 2 visits over 3-5 days. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. The permanent crown is bonded during the second visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between zirconia and ceramic crowns?

Zirconia crowns are extremely strong and durable, making them ideal for back teeth and patients who grind. All-ceramic (E-max) crowns offer the best aesthetics with natural translucency, ideal for front teeth. Many dentists recommend zirconia for molars and E-max for visible teeth.

Is getting a crown painful?

Crown preparation is done under local anesthesia and is painless. You may experience mild sensitivity for a few days after the permanent crown is placed, but this resolves quickly.

How much do dental crowns cost in Turkey?

Dental crowns in Turkey cost €100-€300 per crown depending on the material. Zirconia crowns (the most popular) cost €150-€300, while metal-ceramic crowns cost €100-€150. Compare this to €500-€1,000 per crown in the UK.

How long do dental crowns last?

High-quality zirconia and ceramic crowns typically last 10-20 years with proper care. Some patients keep their crowns for 25+ years. Regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene, and avoiding hard foods help maximize longevity.

Can I get crowns and veneers at the same time?

Yes, this is very common in smile makeover treatments. Crowns are used for severely damaged or root-canal treated teeth, while veneers cover teeth that need cosmetic improvement only. Your dentist will recommend the best combination.

Can I check a Turkish dentist's registration from outside Turkey?

Yes. The Turkish Dental Association (TDHB) publishes an online directory. You can search by name. Ask the clinic for the dentist's full name exactly as registered, then look it up yourself.

Is a prosthodontist necessary for dental crowns?

Not always. A general dentist with significant crown experience can do excellent work. A prosthodontist's additional training becomes more relevant in complex cases such as full-mouth rehabilitation, significant bite changes, or cases requiring crown lengthening. Ask your surgeon how they assess whether your case falls into the complex category.

What should I do if the clinic will not give me the dentist's registration number?

Do not book. Providing a registration number is a routine request and any legitimate clinic will comply immediately. Refusal or vagueness is a serious warning sign.

Is local anaesthesia always sufficient for crown preparation?

For the vast majority of cases, yes. Crown preparation and fitting are performed under local anaesthesia with no sedation required. If you have significant dental anxiety, ask the clinic in advance whether they offer additional options; some offer nitrous oxide or oral sedation.

How do I verify the quoted price covers the full treatment?

Ask for an itemised quote in writing that specifies the price per crown, the material (e-max, zirconia, PFM), the number of visits included, and what happens if a crown needs adjustment or remaking after you return home. Understand the aftercare policy before you pay a deposit.
